Bride and Business Owner…Ohhh That was Rough!

From May 2021-August 2022, 14 months to be exact, I was engaged! This was an exciting time AND I learned a great deal. I started this engagement working for another organization and then opened my private practice in November 2021. With this transition, there are a few things I have learned and/or would do differently!

  1. Schedule Breaks! Even if it means putting it on your calendar! Taking breaks while in such intense life transitions was very hard! In the times when I took time, even if it was an hour, I would feel completely refreshed and ready to give in the ways I love to!

  2. Prioritize the relationships that matter! This started with me prioritizing my well being by eating, sleeping, drinking water, etc. This extended also to making time not to solely focus on work, but to focus on the relationships I have!

  3. If you’re considering pre-marital counseling or individual therapy, I HIGHLY recommend it! I am not just saying this because I am a therapist who does individual and premarital counseling. To be completely transparent, completing a year of premarital counseling is a HUGE reason why I was able to get through this season supporting clients and sustaining my relationship. It forced me to make time to shut off work and focus on the relationship. These counseling relationships, whether in religious or therapeutic settings, truly helps us evaluate what it looks like to move through transitions, make changes, and learn to actively listen to those around us.

  4. Mistakes are inevitable, move through them and learn from them. I made so many mistakes in opening a practice and wedding planning and all the other changes that occurred in the last year. Mistakes are allowed and by moving through them, we preserve our humanity and wellbeing while learning what to do differently.

Balancing these two major transitions was not easy for me. However, I know now that I would not be the person, spouse, therapist, consultant, etc. I am without this experience and for that I am grateful.
